Host Luisa Lyons chats with composer, producer, and lawyer Jay Kuo all about the Broadway musical Allegiance. Topics include how Sunday in the Park with George inspired the filming of Allegiance, the amazing happenstance of meeting George Takei and how Jay came to write George’s story, why producers should get behind filming their shows, and more!

*Editor's Note* We had some difficulties with the audio, but we hope the quality of the content will make this episode a worthwhile listen!

Allegiance, and the accompanying documentary Allegiance to Broadway, are available to stream on Broadway on Demand until July 6, 2022. The musical is also available on BroadwayHD, and on DVD.

Watch clips from the 2021 Japanese-language Horipro Stage production.

Jay Kuo is the CEO of The Social Edge, a digital publishing and social media company based in New York City. Apart from his Broadway and social media work, Jay is a published author, an avid political blogger, and a partner in Gaingels LLC, the nation’s largest private investment syndicate. Tony Tony Tony!
I know many of my readers outside the US were frustrated that they weren’t able to watch the Tony Awards this year, either live or on catch-up. Despite this, it bodes well for filmed theatre that 6 shows from the 2021/22 Broadway season have been, or will be filmed live for release.
  • Diana: The Musical: filmed on Broadway in 2021 and available via Netflix
  • Girl from the North Country: filmed live on Broadway in May 2022. Release date TBA.
  • Six: scheduled to be filmed in late June/early July this year. Release date TBA.
  • Clyde’s: The final 16 performances were livestreamed earlier this year. Not currently available to view.
  • The Lehman Trilogy: filmed live during its original West End run at the National Theatre and currently available in select cinemas via NT Live.
  • Pass Over: Antoinette Nwandu’s extraordinary play filmed live at Steppenwolf Theatre in 2017. Directed by Spike Lee (who also directed Passing Strange) and now available via Amazon Prime.

Earlier in the week, I shared a blog post, Where To Watch the Tony Winners & Nominees, which features a list of over 35 filmed live musicals that this year’s Tony contenders previously worked on, most of which are available to stream!

'Aha Hana Keaka: KEAKA Hawaiian Language Theatre Festival
The month long festival is available on demand for free and includes a wide range films, plays, musicals, and slam poetry performed in “full Hawaiian language to partial Hawaiian language.” The musical Wordsworth, available with Hawaiian or English subtitles, looks particularly delightful. More info and tickets from CFT.

International Thespian Festival
A festival celebrating school theatre taking place at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. For the first time, a virtual option is being made available which includes access to a livestream of the opening ceremony, online workshops, and screenings of The SpongeBob Musical and the National Theatre production of Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. Virtual tickets for non-members are $99US. More info and tickets from ITF.

Where to Watch the Tony Winners & Nominees

Picture
I had so much fun live-tweeting the Tony Awards and sharing the past filmed live work of the nominees! As I shared on Twitter, I love celebrating Broadway & live theatre, but I also want to acknowledge how hard it is for so many people to attend in person because of cost, location, childcare, disability, illness & a myriad of other reasons.

Filmed theatre provides access to theatre, it creates a historical record of the ephemeral, has the potential to generate new income, and can be used as an educational tool. Filmed theatre must be a part of accessibility planning.

It bodes well that 5 shows from this season were filmed/broadcast (whether from Broadway or the West End). I hope that one day, audiences around the world will be able to access every show.

Here you'll find a list of the filmed live musicals and plays from the 2021/22 season, and a list of filmed live musicals that this year's winners and nominees have worked on.

In this week's newsletter dropping on Thursday, patrons will also have access to a list of plays, operas, films, and other digital works from this year's nominees. If you want access, become a Filmed Live Musical Patron today! You'll also get access to the streaming calendar, early access to the podcast, and more bonus content!

Digital Access to Arts and Culture
A new report, Digital Access to Arts and Culture was released this week that details the findings of an 18-month British research project into the role of digital arts and culture in the UK during the pandemic, focusing on its accessibility implications. The report found that:
  • streaming made arts and culture more available, especially to disabled and geographically remote audiences,
  • audiences now see streamed/online arts & culture “as an essential accessibility feature.”
  • despite this, due to cost, low revenue, and lack of infrastructure and funding, arts organizations are pulling away from digital content.
  • audiences with accessibility needs are again being excluded
  • hybrid programming must be a part of accessibility planning for arts organizations
Read the full report via Digital Access Arts.

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee
A medley of musicals was performed as part of the The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee on June 4. The performance included songs from Hamilton, The Lion King, Six, Phantom of the Opera and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. The medley was introduced by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Andrew Lloyd Webber singing together at a baby grand piano. Watch the performance on YouTube.

A big congratulations to Chickenshed, one of my favorite theatre organizations, who were invited to perform in The National Lottery's Big Jubilee Street Party. The event aired on ITV in the UK on June 4, and is now available on demand via ITV (UK viewers only). Take a listen to episode 22 of the Filmed Live Musicals podcast to hear more about Chickenshed’s extraordinary work!

Our Boy by John Kander
Writer Samaan Ashrawi shared a beautiful story on Twitter about his grandfather’s college love John Kander. During the pandemic, Ashrawi discovered a 7” vinyl in the family bookshelf labelled “Our Boy - John Kander - Summer 1951”. The song was actually part of a one act musical composed by a twenty-two year old Kander (who would later go on to write Flora the Red Menace, Cabaret, Chicago, and more), who had wanted Ashwari’s grandfather to be the lead. You can listen to the whole sweet story via Elis.
