Stage Production Notes
A song cycle about twelve unsung women from history who sing to their great loves, the object of their careers. Women represented include an aviator singing to her airplane, an acrobat to her tightrope, and an astronomer to her comet.
Performer and songwriter Angela Sclafani sought to create songs for women that were not about loving a man or a partner. She created Passion Project, which was partly developed at the Orchard Project NYC Greenhouse over the summer of 2019.
The song cycle features a diverse range of women of different ages, backgrounds, and professions, including Artemisia Gentileschi — a Baroque Italian painter, Mary Fields — the first black female Star Route Mail Carrier, Lilian Bland — the “flying feminist”, Maryam Mirzakhani — an Iranian mathematician, and Junko Tabei — a Japanese mountaineer.
In August 2019, Sclafani launched a Kickstarter campaign to a fund concert performance of Passion Project. The campaign was successful, with 64 backers raising $3855.
Passion Project Vol. I premiered in a concert performance at NYC's The Green Room 42 on September 23, 2019. The concert featured an all-female band, and an all-female cast including Grace McLean, Hannah Elless, Tonya Pinkins, Desi Oakley, Lauren Robinson, Kim Blanck, Shoba Narayan, Katie Thompson, Lianah Sta. Ana, Ashley Pérez Flanagan, Arielle Jacobs, Lexi Lawson, and Angela Sclafani.

Individual clips from the concert were released on YouTube in early 2020.
To celebrate Women’s History Month, and in response to COVID-19, Passion Project was streamed on Facebook Live on March 25, 2020. Donations to the stream were shared with artists within the production who were displaced or lost income as a result of the COVID-19 crisis.
To date, the video has been viewed nearly 2,500 times.
