Stage Production Notes
Established in 1865, British high street retailer Timpson provides shoe repairs and key cutting services, as well as clothing repairs and dry cleaning, and a wide range of photo products. With over 2000 stores across the UK and Ireland, the company remains within the Timpson family.
With a nod to Romeo and Juliet, Timpson: The Musical is a fictional origin story of how the retailer came to provide both cobbling and key cutting services.
After working on improv musicals at the University of Warwick, writers Sam Cochrane, Chris Baker, Theo Caplan and Tom Slade sought to create more work together. Based on an idea by Sam Cochrane, the group developed Timpson: The Musical. The show immediately received the support of Timpson’s Chief Executive James Timpson, who not only gave the team his blessing to use the company name, but financially supported the production at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2018.
Timpson: The Musical was first performed at the Other Palace in London in 2018 before a successful season the Edinburgh Fringe, where the musical was one of 10 productions to be receive the The Stage Edinburgh Award.
After the Edinburgh Fringe, Timpson: The Musical was performed in London, Birmingham, and Brighton.
Over the course of its various runs, the musical has received positive reviews. The BBC's Ali Vowles described the musical as "bonkers but brilliant," while Tim Harding, writing for The Reviews Hub, described the musical as "charmingly zany but beautifully crafted evening of entertainment.” Broadway Baby’s Miles Hurley stated it was "absurd, ridiculous, and imperfect, but…sure as hell entertaining,” and The Stage’s Paul Vale noted that while musical "may thrive on sophomoric humour and shoe puns..., it’s tightly scripted, inventively staged and could well represent the dawn of a new music-focused comedy collective."
