Stage Production Notes
Inspired by a news article about the FBI assisting in the recovery of a pair of stolen ruby slippers, Golden Bricks and Ruby Shoes is an in-development song cycle about the famed Wizard of Oz pumps, and the people who were obsessed with them.
With lyrics by Gillian Pencavel and a score by Patrick Moore, the song cycle was first performed at a scratch night at Belfast’s Accidental Theatre in March 2019. The Accidental is a small black box theatre with a capacity of up to 100 guests. The company regularly livestreams its productions, scratch nights, readings, and meetings, via Facebook, YouTube, and Twitch, as part of its mission to reach a wider audience.
Despite featuring just three songs from the song cycle, the scratch night received so much positive feedback that the creative team decided to hold a “work-in-progress” performance in September 2019, once again staged at the Accidental Theatre.
The lino-cut ruby shoe logo was made by librettist Gillian Pencavel and prints are currently available for sale.
It had been hoped that a full-scale production would be staged in 2020. More information about the production can be found here.
