Stage Production Notes
Ernest Shackleton Loves Me is a multimedia musical that tells the story of Brooklyn-based avante-garde composer/artist/mom who finds inspiration in the early 20th century explorer, leader, and hero Ernest Shackleton.
Composed by Joe DiPietro (Memphis), Brendan Milburn, and Val Vigoda, Ernest Shackleton first premiered at the Leo K. Theatre, part of the Seattle Repertory Theatre, in 2014.
Ernest Shackleton also played at the George Street Playhouse from April 28 — May 17, 2015, and the ArtsEmerson in Boston from September 20 — October 5, 2015.
The musical transferred off-Broadway, opening at Second Stage’s Tony Kiser Theatre on May 7, 2017.
Although some critics noted that the production occasionally veered into sentimentality, Ernest Shackleton garnered high praise over the course of its various runs.
The Seattle Times described it as “visually impressive, sonically inventive and whimsically diverting,” while The Huffington Post stated the show was “absolutely original, a welcome rarity.”
Performers Val Vigoda and Wade McCollum also received strong reviews.
