Stage Production Notes
Shelly Dinkley, a gutsy news reporter, believes zombies are terrorizing her small town. She witnesses her co-worker, Eve, attacked and surprisingly saved by a Zombie with a "heart." Eve discovers there's more to this disenchanted Zombie than just decaying limbs. As sparks fly between the pair, they join Shelly on a mystical journey to restore the Zombie's humanity; all the while being hunted by a cluster of zany, brainless, kick-line loving zombies, led by the mysterious Big Z who has a secret score to settle with Eve.
Under the direction of Lorin Latarro, the new musical received a 29-hour reading. The reading featured Betsy Wolfe, Ben Fankhauser, Hunter Ryan Herdlicka, Lauren Zakrin, Jye Frasca, Matthew LaBanca, Heathcliff Saunders, Alex Gibson, Lindsay Roberts, and Kennedy Caughell.
A staged concert version of the musical was presented during the 2019 New York Musical Festival (NYMF) at the Alice Griffin Jewel Box Theatre on July 29. The cast included Lindsay Nicole Chambers (Shelly), Chris Dwan (Kevin), Amanda Jane Cooper (Eve), Zach Adkins (Zombie 6), Nicholas Belton (Big Z), Hunter Ryan Herdlicka (Charles), Blaine Krauss (Stan/Zombie 4/Oracle), Alex Gibson (Zombie 2), Mary Page Nance (Zombie 3), Kennedy Caughell (Solo Zombie) and Daisy Hobbs (Jess/Zombie 5/Fairy).
The concert performance received rave reviews. Writing on Medium, Ryan Leeds stated “the energetic score popped” and praised the humor, and underlying humanity, of the musical. DC Metro Theater Arts reviewer Deb Miller described the musical as “extremely smart, thoughtful, and witty,” and noted that despite the “wide array of musical styles,” Canfield’s score was “well-synthesized, coherent, and harmonious.” Jan Ewing, writing for Pup’s Books praised the energy and vocal skills of the cast and the “funny, energetic and engaging” score.
An off-Broadway run is planned for 2021.
