The Woodsman
The untold story of the Tin Woodsman, the woman he loved, and the witch that would stop at nothing to keep them apart. A lonely woodsman from the Land of Oz must embark on a harrowing journey to protect the love of his life from her evil guardian, the Wicked Witch of the East. Through puppetry, movement, and song, Strangemen & Co. presents a hauntingly beautiful and ultimately heartbreaking twist on the forgotten writings of L. Frank Baum. Filmed live off-Broadway at New World Stages in 2016.
Where to watch
theatrical history
Directed by James Ortiz and Claire Karpen, with music by Edward W. Hardy and lyrics by Jennifer Loring, The Woodsman is “An American Dramatico-Musical” that tells the backstory of The Tinman from The Wizard of Oz. The work has also been alternately billed as a play, and a play with music.
Director and co-creator James Ortiz was inspired to create The Woodsman following a childhood love of The Wizard of Oz books and 1939 film. According to an article on Medium, Ortiz was particularly inspired by illustrated versions of the books, such as those by the Hildebrandt brothers, Charles Santore, and the original illustrations by John R. Neill. In creating the world of The Woodsman, Ortiz sought to recreate the magic of L. Frank Baum’s novels, and the world evoked by the illustrations — “A beautiful, awe-inspiring place, an introspective world, a meditative vacation.”
The Woodsman was created by Diana Stall and James Ortiz in 2012 and began as a benefit for Strangemen & Co. The score was composed by Edward W. Hardy, with lyrics by Jennifer Loring.
Standard Toykraft
Produced by Steven Laing and Jason Ralph under Strangemen & Co., The Woodsman premiered at Brooklyn’s Standard Toykraft in 2012. The production was directed by James Ortiz, who also provided the puppet and scenic design. Carol Uraneck was the choreographer and costume designer, and Kate Kuhle was the production stage manager.
The cast included Ismenia Mendes (Nimmee), Will Gallacher (Pa/Tinker), Edward W. Hardy (Munchkin/Violinist), Jennifer Loring (Ma), Morgan Auld (Munchkin), Sofia Lauwers (Tinker), Amanda Lederer (The Witch/Tinker), James Ortiz (Nick Chopper), and Carol Uraneck (The Witch).
Ars Nova Ant Fest (2013)
The Woodsman was presented at the Ars Nova Ant Fest in 2013. Produced by Steven Laing & Jason Ralph, the run was directed by James Ortiz, with music by Edward W. Hardy, lighting design by Catherine Clark and Jamie Roderick, and prop design by Sara Dowling. The cast included Devin Dunne Cannon, Will Gallacher, Sofia Lauwers, Amanda Lederer, Jen Loring, Ismenia Mendes, James Ortiz and Carol Uraneck.
Jim Henson Foundation Grant
In 2014, James Ortiz and Strangemen and Co. received a $5000 project grant from Jim Henson Foundation.
59E59 (2014 & 2015)
Produced by Strangemen & Co., Robb Nanus, Rachel Sussman, The Woodsman opened off-Broadway at 59E59 Theaters in January 2014 for a sold-out three-week run. Claire Karpen joined the production team as co-director with James Ortiz. Christina Aguilar served as the production stage manager, with Geoff Maus as assistant stage manager, and Carol Uraneck as costume designer.
An uncredited TheaterMania reviewer described the production as “a beautifully full-bodied sensory experience,” praising James Ortiz and Claire Karpen’s direction, Catherine Clark’s lighting design, and Jennifer Loring and Edward H. Hardy’s score. The reviewer concluded “Though in the confines of such an intimate space you never quite lose yourself in the fantasy unfolding onstage, even an objective eye can appreciate the beauty of fine storytelling.”
In 2015, produced by Leo Mizuhara with associate producer Rebecca Black, The Woodsman returned to 59E59 Theaters commencing previews in Theater B, on January 13, and officially opening on January 18. According to Playbill, the musical was the first production in the theater’s history to make a return engagement.
Devin Dunne Cannon joined the production team as associate director, Natalie Price was the production stage manager, Geoff Maus again worked as assistant stage manager, and Molly Seidel was the costume designer. The 59E59 cast included Ben Bass, Will Gallacher, Alex J. Gould, Amanda Lederer, Lauren Nordvig, James Ortiz, Eliza Simpson, Meghan St. Thomas and Sophia Zukoski, and Edward W. Hardy.
The Woodsman received glowing reviews, though critics noted that further development was needed for the show to have its full impact. The New York Times theatre critic Laura Collins-Hughes stated “The spectacle is handmade, infused with breath and light,” and praised Ortiz’s puppet design as “fanciful and gorgeous.” Collins-Hughes also praised Edward H. Hardy’s superb violin playing, though noted the show needed more than its hour-long run time to “lodge “The Woodsman” in our hearts.” Writing for Stage and Cinema, Dimitry Zvonkov stated that although The Woodsman was “vibrant, continually inventive, and often magical,” the show had “occasional moments when the physical storytelling isn’t as precise as it should be.” The HuffPost’s Jan Siegel described the musical as “both striking and mesmerizing,” particularly praising Hardy’s violin music.
New World Stages (2016)
On February 8, 2016, The Woodsman opened at New World Stages. The production was directed by James Ortiz & Claire Karpen, with set and puppet design by James Ortiz, costume design by Molly Seidel, lighting by Catherine Clark & Jamie Roderick, movement coordination by Will Gallacher, fight direction by Aaron McDaniel, and music direction & violin by Naomi Florin. CJ LaRoche served as the production stage manager.
The New World Stages cast included Benjamin Bass, Devin Dunne Cannon, Will Gallacher, Alex J. Gould, Amanda A. Lederer, Aaron McDaniel, Lauren Nordvig, James Ortiz, Eliza Martin Simpson, Meghan St. Thomas, Sophia Zukoski.
The Woodsman once more received overwhelmingly positive reviews with critics praising the puppetry, score, and the performances of the ensemble, notably Eliza Simpson. Writing for Variety, Marilyn Stasio found the violin accompaniment “expressive but rather hectic,” but concluded “The puppeteers are proficient and the effects are exquisite… The life-sized tin puppet of the woodsman…is heartbreaking.”
In a mixed review for New York Theater, Jonathan Mandell described the ensemble as “dedicated,” and praised the “heartfelt and beautiful staging.” Mandell concluded “…everything is tasteful and inventive, languid and lovely, artistic and, to me, a tad tedious.”
Theatre blogger Mark Robinson was much more enthusiastic, effusing “The Woodsman… executed to haunting perfection by the Strangeman & Co. ensemble, is a show that simply grabbed a hold of me and refuses to let go… It’s the kind of theatre that is so engaging that you forget to breathe.”
During its run at New World Stages, The Woodsman was filmed live by BroadwayHD in partnership with Thirteen and Theater Close-Up.
The Woodsman concluded its off Broadway run on April 29, 2016.
In September of 2016, The Woodsman was broadcast on PBS and released for on-demand viewing on BroadwayHD (see Film History below).
Bluebarn Theatre (2019)
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Omaha’s Bluebarn Theatre, Strangemen & Co. were invited to present a limited engagement of The Woodsman. Members of both companies were graduates of the SUNY Purchase Acting Conservatory.
The Woodsman played at the Bluebarn Theatre between May 16 and June 16, 2019.
Licensing
Due to contractual issues between the writer and composer, The Woodsman is not currently available to license. As noted on Edward W. Hardy’s website, “THE WOODSMAN is separately owned by co-authors Edward W. Hardy (music copyright holder), James Ortiz (stage directions/ puppet design). Matters between Hardy v Ortiz et al. are unresolved.” In a 2016 interview with New York Theatre Review, Hardy claimed he “was not given proper billing for [his] work” when the show first transferred to off-Broadway, though this was resolved on the return 59E59 engagement. On the show’s website, Hardy states that he has not been compensated for his musical work by BroadwayHD or BlueBarn Theatre.

Film history
The Woodsman was filmed live by BroadwayHD during its off Broadway run at New World Stages in early 2016.
The Woodsman premiered on PBS’ Theatre Close-Up on September 2, 2016. Four days later, on September 6, 2016, the show was made available for on demand viewing via BroadwayHD.
There are very few reviews for the capture of The Woodsman, though reviews reflect the opinions of the in-person critics.
In a guest review for Once Upon a Blog, reviewer Razorfriend stated of the capture “I thought this adaptation had a lot of heart (sorry), combined with technical virtuosity and creativity. It was very satisfying to see my favourite part of the Oz mythos get a theatrical adaptation from talented people who clearly love the material themselves.” Razorfriend also commented on the availability, or lack thereof, of shows on BroadwayHD for audiences outside the US, and claimed that the stream was of “reasonable quality.”
In an article for The Colgate Maroon-News, Bri Liddell noted, ““The Woodsman” is a wonderful mess of contradictions that will leave viewers feeling joy, sorrow, satisfaction, confusion and everything in between.” Liddell also shared quotes from students who spoke about the production as if they had seen it in person. Laine Girolamo stated, “The way that the Wicked Witch hovered ominously throughout the show was extremely intriguing to me.” Quinlan Owen’s noted, “The fireflies scene […] was something of its own entirely. The warm lighting cast over the stage and the little drops of golden luminosity in their midst made it so beautiful to watch…”
The Woodsman has received at least two special screenings in which James Ortiz was a special guest - OzCon in Kellog West, Pomona, California in 2018, and Colgate’s Brehmer Theater in Hamilton, New York, in September 2021.
The Woodsman is currently available on demand via Amazon and BroadwayHD.
