Hadestown began in 2006 as a community theatre project in Vermont. Initially conceived as a “folk opera” under the title A Crack in the Wall, the show featured music and lyrics by Anaïs Mitchell, with arrangements by Michael Chorney and staging by Ben t. Matchstick.
Throughout 2006-2007, the one-act show was performed in Vermont and Boston with a 22-person cast. According to Mitchell, the early productions were supported by “grants from the Vermont Community Foundation, the Vermont Arts Council, producing partner Higher Ground Music, and many individual supporters.”
In 2007, Mitchell included “Hades & Persephone,” a solo song, on her album The Brightness.
In 2010, Mitchell released a concept album entitled Hadestown on the Righteous Babe Records label. Founded by Ani DiFranco, the indie label aims to be “a people-friendly, sub-corporate, woman-informed, queer-happy small business that puts music before rock stardom and ideology before profit.” The concept album cast included Anaïs Mitchell as Euridyce, Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) as Orpheus, Ani DiFranco as Persephone, Greg Brown as Hades, Ben Knox (the Low Anthem) as Hermes, and the Haden Triplets as the Fates. Mitchell’s earlier song “Hades & Persephone” became a duet under the title “How Long?”
The concept album was well received. Writing for NME, Jessica Mackay praised the album’s singers and described Hadestown as “nothing short of incredible,” “artfully rollicking,” and defused that it was Anaïs Mitchell’s “Odyssey.” The BBC’s music critic Jon Lusk also praised the performances of the singers and stated “It’s the fine and varied arrangements by Michael Chorney and Todd Sickafoose, and Mitchell’s memorable melodies that hold things together.”
Between 2010-2013, Anaïs Mitchell, Michael Chorney, and the Hadestown Orchestra performed concert versions of the show with guest singers across North America and the UK.
In 2012, Mitchell saw the downtown production of Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812, and approached director Rachel Chavkin to help develop Hadestown into a full-length musical.
New York Theater Workshop (2016)
Hadestown received a developmental production at the New York Theater Workshop in 2016, where it premiered on May 16, 2016. One of the main changes made to the show was expanding the role of Hermes.
The NYTW production was directed by Rachel Chavkin, with scenic design by Rachel Hauck, costume design by Michael Krass, lighting design by Bradley King, sound design by Robert Kaplowitz, properties by Noah Meade, arrangements and orchestrations by Michael Chorney, music supervision, co-arrangements and orchestrations by Todd Sickafoose, music direction by Liam Robinson, choreography by David Neumann, and dramaturgy by Ken Carnigilia. Lindsey Turteltaub served as the stage manager.
The NYTW cast included Damon Duanno (Orpheus), Nabiyah Be (Eurydice), Chris Sullivan (Hermes), Patrick Page (Hades), Amber Gray (Persephone), Lulu Fall (Fate), Jessie Shelton (Fate), and Shaina Taub (Fate) (Suffs, Old Hats).
The New York Times’ Charles Isherwood declared the show a Critic’s Pick and described the musical as “gorgeously sung, [and] elementally spare.” Isherwood praised Rachel Chavkin’s “simple but inventive staging,” Bradley King’s “fluid lighting,” and the outstanding performances of the cast.
The NYTW production closed on July 31, 2016.
An hour-long live cast album featuring the off-Broadway cast was released in 2017 by Warner Music Group.
Citadel Theater (Edmonton, Canada) (2017)
Hadestown continued to be workshopped and developed during a run at the Citadel Theater in Edmonton, Canada in 2017. Edmonton was reportedly chosen for its distance from New York and budget considerations. As quoted in The New York Times, Rachel Chavkin stated that Edmonton was chosen as “a place where there wouldn’t be a whole set of eyes seeing the work and judging it before it’s fully baked.” As noted by theatre reporter Michael Paulson, the budget was also able to go further with the Canadian dollar.
Produced by Mara Isaacs, Dale Franzen, Hunter Arnold and Tom Kirdah, the Edmonton production utilized the same creative team at the NYTW run. In addition, Ben T. Matchstick was credited for co-conception, and Lisa Russell served as the stage manager. The Edmonton cast included Reeve Carney (Orpheus), Patrick Page (Hades), T.V. Carpio (Eurydice), Kingsley Leggs (Hermes), Jewelle Blackman (Fate), Kira Guloien (Fate), Evangelia Kambites (Fate), Vance Avery (Worker), Andrew Broderick (Worker), Tara Jackson (Worker), and Hal Wesley Rogers (Worker).
As reported by Michael Paulson, the Edmonton run “was an unqualified success — buzz strong, attendance high, feedback positive.”
National Theatre (London) (2018)
Hadestown opened at the National Theatre in London on Nov 2, 2018.
The National Theatre production was directed by Rachel Chavkin, with scenic design by Rachel Hauck, costume design by Michael Krass, lighting design by Bradley King, sound design by Nevin Steinberg and Jessica Paz, choreography by David Neumann, musical direction and vocal arrangements by Liam Robinson, orchestrations and arrangements by Michael Chorney and Todd Sickafoose, and dramaturgy by Ken Cerniglia.
The cast included Patrick Page (Hades), Reeve Carney (Orpheus), Eva Noblezada (Eurydice) (Miss Saigon), André de Shields (Hermes), Amber Gray (Persephone), Rosie Fletcher (Fate), Carly Mercedes Dyer (Fate), Gloria Onitiri (Fate), with Sharif Afifi, Beth Hinton-Lever, Seyi Omooba, Aiesha Pease, Joseph Prouse, Jordan Shaw, and Shaq Taylor in the ensemble.
The National Theatre production received warm reviews. While critics sometimes found the show to be lacking dramaturgically, they praised Anaïs Mitchell’s score, Rachel Hauck’s scenic design, and the performances of the cast. In a four-star review for The Guardian, Michael Billington enthused “Whether you call it a folk opera, a hip oratorio or a musicalised myth, it boasts some cracking songs that far outweigh its dramatic shortcomings.” Billington described Mitchell’s score as “exhilarating,” however felt that the “final intention” was not clear. Writing for The Theatre Times, Rob Hastings stated “Though not the masterpiece it could be, Hadestown is a dazzling party for Americana fans. You’ll struggle to find more joy in a musical this year.” An anonymous reviewer for Ask the Ushers was more effusive in their praise, stating the show was “Quite simply astonishing!… wholeheartedly urgent and relevant, beautifully executed and thoroughly entertaining, the work is wonderfully inventive and imaginatively staged.” The reviewer also praised Mitchell’s score as “truly magnificent.”
The National Theatre production closed on January 26, 2019.
Broadway (2019)
Broadway previews of Hadestown began at the Walter Kerr Theatre on March 22, 2019. The show officially opened on April 17, 2019.
The cast included André De Shields (Hermes; the production marked the 50th anniversary of De Shields’ career), Reeve Carney (Orpheus), Amber Gray (Persephone), Eva Noblezada (Eurydice), Patrick Page (Hades), Jewelle Blackman (Fate) Yvette Gonzalez-Nacer (Fate), and Kay Trinidad (Fate) with Afra Hines, Timothy Hughes, John Krause, Kimberly Marable, and Ahmad Simmons. The band included Liam Robinson (Conductor, Piano/Accordian), Brian Drye (Trombone/Glockenspiel), Ben Perowsky (Drums/Percussion), Michael Chorney (Guitar), Dana Lyn (Violin), Marika Hughes (Cello), and Robinson Morse (Double Bass).
As in the West End, Hadestown received mostly warm reviews. In praising the show’s development from the NYTW production to Broadway, New York Times theatre critic Jesse Green described Hadestown as a “sumptuous, hypnotic and somewhat hyperactive musical.” Green praised Chavkin’s direction, and stated all the production elements “are as good as it gets.” Green also highlighted the performances of Patrick Page and Amber Gray, but felt that Reeve Carney and Eva Noblezada’s performances reflected “blandly written” roles.
Hadestown was nominated for, and won, a slew of awards including Tony Awards, Drama Desk Awards, Outer Critics Circle Awards for Best Musical, Best Score, and several Best Featured Actor and Actress. See Awards and Nominations below.

Hadestown closed temporarily from March 12, 2020 until September 2, 2021 due to the global COVID pandemic.
Hadestown continues to run on Broadway with a succession of starry performers from Broadway, television, and music worlds stepping into the lead roles including original concept album performer Ani DiFranco (Persephone), Jordan Fisher (Orpheus), Isa Briones (Euridyce), Lilias White (Hermes), and Jack Wolfe (Orpheus).
West End Revival (2024)
Previews for a second run in the West End at the Lyric Theatre began on February 10, 2024 before the show officially opened on February 21, 2024.
The West End cast included Dónal Finn (Orpheus), Grace Hodgett Young (Eurydice), Zachary James (Hades), Melanie La Barrie (Hermes), Gloria Onitiri (Persephone), Bella Brown (Fate), Madeline Charlemagne (Fate), and Allie Daniel (Fate), with Lauren Azania, Tiago Dhondt Bamberger, Beth Hinton-Lever, Waylon Jacobs, and Christopher Short.
The West End production received overwhelmingly positive reviews. Melanie LaBarrie received universal praise for her performance as Hermes. Rachel Chavkin’s direction also received high praise. In a glowing review for The Guardian, Arifa Akbar enthused “There is no weak link in the cast, who have spine-tingling voices that become thunderous in chorus,” and concluded “This is one of the best West End musicals around.” Theatre blogger Louise Penn praised the performances of the cast and concluded “Hadestown is a triumph of stillness, a romantic fable with a dark heart of money trumping freedom, and a sliver of hope. Rachel Chavkin’s production captures the contradiction beautifully.”
Like the Broadway, and initial West End critics, some reviewers felt the show lacked something dramaturgically, Writing for WhatsOnStage, Sarah Crompton praised the show as an “exhilarating ride,” and “phenomenally clever”, but found the show lacking, stating “the material just doesn’t quite coalesce into the ending I long for.” Similarly, Mert Dilek, writing for The Arts Desk, praised the cast and score, stating “Mitchell’s impeccable music is truly the heart and soul of the evening.” Despite the high praise, Dilek also felt “some of the plot points would benefit from greater clarity, and the ensemble of Workers could be better integrated into the story…” ultimately Dilek stated “Hadestown remains a remarkable achievement.”
The West End production was nominated for a 2024 Olivier Award for Best Revival of a Musical.
A London cast album was released in August 2024.
The West End production was filmed live across three performances in February and March, 2025 (see Film History below).

South Korea
The first non-English language production of Hadestown opened at the LG Art Center in Yeoksam-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul in August 2021. The alternating cast include:

In 2022 the Korean production played in Daegu and Busan.
The Korean production returned to Seoul for a second engagement in 2024 with most of the 2021 cast reprising their roles.

Presented by Opera Australia and JONES Theatrical Group, Hadestown premiered in Australia at the Theatre Royal in Sydney in February 2025.
The Australian cast included Christine Anu (Hermes), Abigail Adriano (Eurydice). Noah Mullins (Orpheus), Adrian Tamburini (Hades), and Elenoa Rokobaro (Persephone), with Sarah Murr, Jennifer Trijo and Imani Williams (The Fates). The Workers included Eliza Soriano, Afua Adjei, Sam Richardson, Iosefa Laga’aia, Devon Braithwaite, Molly Bugeja, Jessie Monk, Jack Lyall, and Joshua Kobeck.
The Australian production later played at Her Majesty’s Theatre in Melbourne.
Amsterdam
An English-language production of Hadestown opened at the Royal Theatre Carré in June 2025 for a limited engagement.
The Dutch cast featured a mix of British and Dutch actors including Claudia de Breij and Maarten Heijmans sharing the role of Hermes, Jeangu Macrooy (Orpheus), Sara Afiba (Euridyce), Edwin Jonker (Hades), Joy Wielkens (Persephone), Jony Ayton-Kent (Fate), April Darby (Fate), and Aïcha Gill (Fate), with Tiago Dhondt Bamberger, Winny Herbert, Maxime Karsten, Willemijn Maandag, Simon Oskarsson, Melissa Otten, Lucas Schilperoort, Christopher Short, and Micky Vermeer as Workers and Swings.

The Dutch cast featured a mix of British and Dutch actors including Claudia de Breij and Maarten Heijmans sharing the role of Hermes, Jeangu Macrooy (Orpheus), Sara Afiba (Euridyce), Edwin Jonker (Hades), Joy Wielkens (Persephone), Jony Ayton-Kent (Fate), April Darby (Fate), and Aïcha Gill (Fate), with Tiago Dhondt Bamberger, Winny Herbert, Maxime Karsten, Willemijn Maandag, Simon Oskarsson, Melissa Otten, Lucas Schilperoort, Christopher Short, and Micky Vermeer as Workers and Swings.

Hadestown is licensed by Concord Theatricals. The Teen edition is currently available for licensing.
Film history
Hadestown was filmed live across 3 performances in the West End between February 28 and March 1, 2025.
The original leads, Eva Noblezada (Euridyce), André De Shields (Hermes), Reeve Carney (Orpheus), Amber Gray (Persephone), Patrick Page (Hades), all returned to London for a limited engagement to film the show, and were scheduled to appear in the production until March 9, 2025. The other cast members included Bella Brown (Fate), Madeline Charlemagne (Fate), and Allie Daniel (Fate). The Workers included Lauren Azania, Tiago Dhondt Bamberger, Waylon Jacobs and Christopher Short. The swings were Lucinda Buckley, Francessca Daniella-Baker, Winny Herbert, Ryesha Higgs and Miriam Nyarko.
During rehearsals, Patrick Page ruptured his Achilles tendon and withdrew from the limited engagement, however was able to perform for the taping. Phillip Boykin, who had just completed a run as Hades on Broadway, flew to London to replace Page,
The capture was directed by the London-based Australian filmed theatre veteran Brett Sullivan for Steam Motion and Sound.
The film will be distributed under the title Hadestown: The Musical in North America and “English speaking territories” by Bleecker Street’s Crosswalk and LD Entertainment.
Hadestown: The Musical will receive its world premier at the Tribeca Film Festival on June 8, 2026, and the the premier will include a live performance from Eva Noblezada and Reeve Carney. The film will also be screened at the festival on June 9 and 12, 2026.
