Stage Production Notes
Described as "a world in which Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt moves in with the Gilmore Girls,” Calling All Kates is loosely based on a true story. Mark is unceremoniously dumped by his fiancé Kate, but he has already paid for a non-refundable honeymoon around the world. Instead of wasting the trip, Mark seeks out another woman with the same name as his ex-fiancé, and together they embark on a wacky journey around the world.
Chad Rabinovitz, director of the Adirondack Theatre Festival, discovered the story on Reddit, and after receiving a grant from New York State Council on the Arts, commissioned playwright Emily Goodson and composer/lyricist Jeremy Schonfeld to write the musical.
Calling all Kates premiered in 2017 at the Bloomington Playwrights Project in Bloomington, Indiana. The production starred Mike Nappi (Mark) and Emily Crowley (Kate), with music director Benjamin Aaron Smith, who also played several characters. David Wade provided scenic design.
Reviewer George Walker stated the musical was “warmly realized.”
The musical received further development, and under the direction of Chad Rabinovitz, was performed at the Adirondack Theatre Festival in Glens Falls, New York in 2019. The cast was expanded to 5 people, and featured Joshua Isreal (Mark) Zoe Jensen (Kate), David Rowen (Narrator) Mac Myles (Matty), and Hannah Berggren (Alice).
Reviewer Kathleen Phalen-Tomaselli described the show as "sweet, zany, magical and sometimes heart-tugging” and a “delightful respite from meanness."
Calling All Kates opened at the Prima Theatre in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, on February 21, 2020. The new production was directed by Nathan Mittleman, and featured Caleb Novell (Mark), Lindsay Webster (Kate), Nicole Stacie (Narrator), Mikey LoBalsamo (Mateo), and Rachel Wolin (Alice).
The musical was the first fully staged production of a new musical at the Prima Theatre.
Lancaster Online’s Jane Holahan described the musical as “delightfully fluffy,” and a good night out for an “escape and some fun humor”.
